Abstract

The novels "Umrao Jaan Ada" by Mirza Hadi Ruswa and "Khwab-e-Saraab" by Anees Ashfaq delve deeply into the decline of Lucknavi culture. Ruswa’s classic "Umrao Jaan Ada" is a vivid depiction of the social, moral, and cultural deterioration of the once-glorious Lucknow, symbolized through the life of a courtesan, Umrao Jaan. Born as an innocent girl named Amiran, her transformation into a courtesan reflects the broader collapse of societal values, driven by the extravagance and moral decay of the aristocratic classes. Ruswa masterfully weaves a narrative where characters from different strata, including nobles, courtesans, and commoners, showcase the various aspects of this decaying society. The novel portrays a Lucknow where the grandiosity of its cultural heritage is juxtaposed with the emptiness and downfall of its values. Anees Ashfaq’s "Khwab-e-Saraab" extends the narrative of "Umrao Jaan Ada," focusing on the search for the original manuscript of Ruswa’s novel. The story explores the remnants of Lucknavi culture, human psychology, and the erosion of traditions. Through the lens of the past, Ashfaq revisits the era of Umrao Jaan, highlighting the complexities of identity and the profound impact of cultural loss. Characters like Sharmeela Khanum, representing three generations, play pivotal roles in uncovering new truths about Umrao Jaan’s lineage, further expanding the narrative’s scope. Ashfaq presents the notion that cultural heritage, despite changing times, leaves indelible marks on society. Both novels, rich in psychological depth and cultural commentary, offer a unique blend of fiction and historical truth, emphasizing the connection between personal lives and broader cultural shifts. These works stand as testaments to the power of storytelling in preserving and critiquing cultural legacies.
