Abstract

Dera Ghazi Khan is an ancient and historic city in southern Punjab that holds a prominent place in the history of the region due to its unique geographical location, tribal traditions, cultural diversity, and political and commercial importance. The city is attributed to the family of the Mirani Baloch Sardar Haji Khan in the late 15th century and was named Dera Ghazi Khan after his son Ghazi Khan. In the early days, the importance of the city increased due to its location between the Indus River and the Solomon Mountains, which made it an important center for trade relations and transportation between different regions. During the Mughal era, Afghan and Durrani rule, and the Sikh era, the city faced various political and administrative changes, while after the British came to power after 1849, significant changes occurred in its administrative structure and urban development. The floods and erosion of the Indus River severely affected the old city, especially after the floods of 1909, a new city was built at the present location, which proved to be a major turning point in the urban history of Dera Ghazi Khan. The main objective of the study under consideration is to examine the historical evolution, political and administrative changes, geographical factors and socio-cultural formation of Dera Ghazi Khan. The research clearly shows that Dera Ghazi Khan is not just an ancient city but an important historical region formed by a combination of various civilizational, tribal and cultural influences. Mirani Baloch rule, Mughal influences, British colonial administration and local Seraiki and Balochi cultural traditions played an important role in its history. Thus, to understand the historical identity of Dera Ghazi Khan, it is necessary to study its political past as well as its geography, Indus River, tribal system, culture and urban evolution.
