Abstract

Natural disasters are a constant and unpredictable aspect of human history that not only cause loss of life and property but also severely disrupt social and economic systems. In recent decades, the intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms, droughts, and other calamities have significantly increased, affecting both developed and developing countries around the world. Pakistan is among the nations that, due to its geographical, environmental, and social factors, has repeatedly faced such disasters — including the 2005 earthquake, the devastating floods of 2010, and the destruction caused by recent heavy rains. As a result of natural disasters, millions of people become homeless, sources of livelihood are destroyed, and education and healthcare systems become paralyzed. In such situations, while governmental institutions provide relief to the best of their capacity, Islamic society also plays its role at the community level through its unique charitable and welfare system. Islamic teachings promote mechanisms like Zakat, Sadaqah (charity), Waqf (endowments), donations, and Bayt al-Mal (public treasury), which are considered strong tools for humanitarian service, supporting the needy, and restoring social balance. The purpose of this research article is to explore how effective the Islamic charitable system can be in post-disaster rehabilitation and how these teachings can be applied to meet contemporary challenges. Through this article, we aim to examine the role of Islamic history, Qur'anic teachings, the Prophetic model (Seerah), and the contributions of modern Islamic welfare institutions to propose a comprehensive model that is not only practical for disaster recovery but also rooted in humanity, sustainability, and religious principles.
