Exploring the Dimensions of Ittiba-e-Sunnat: A Critical Study of Sufi Muhammad Barkat Ali Ludhianvi’s Thoughts

Abstract

This paper explores the comprehensive discourse of Hazrat Abu Anees Muhammad Barkat Ali Ludhianvi, the spiritual founder of Dar-ul-Ihsan and a prolific writer of over 300 works, focusing on his teachings on Ittiba-e-Sunnat (emulation of the Prophetic way). Drawing upon his scholarly and spiritual legacy, this study examines how Hazrat Sufi Barkat Ali conceptualizes and promotes Sunnah as the essence of all religious practice and the cornerstone of a spiritually fulfilling life. Hazrat Barkat Ali's assertion that the Sunnah embodies the distilled wisdom of 124,000 Prophets underlines its theological primacy. He contends that a single act done in accordance with the Sunnah surpasses all other voluntary deeds, and that Ittiba-e-Sunnat yields inner tranquillity, divine acceptance, and spiritual illumination. This paper highlights his treatment of the Sunnah not only as ritual but as a transformative path encompassing simplicity, generosity, social reform (e.g., widow remarriage, dowry reform), steadfastness in trials, and unwavering commitment to Dawat-o-Tableegh (Islamic propagation). Through qualitative textual analysis of his writings, this research demonstrates how Hazrat Sufi Barkat Ali reframes the Prophetic Sunnah as both the outer shell and inner core of Islamic spirituality — a singular, complete system that provides guidance for individual transformation and societal revival.
